Welcome on board to true maritime experiences
LIKE SAILORS BEFORE US
A landlubber when boarding “Svanen”, you soon adapt to the role as sailor. Instruction is given by the permanent crew, consisting of four persons with long experience as sailors and as youth instructors. All participants take part in ordinary shipboard chores: tricks at the helm, lookout, sail handling, cooking, dishwashing, scrubbing and painting.
OFF DUTY
Work and free time alternates between port and starboard watch team. Leisure time is shared with others off duty – sunning, talking and getting to know each other. Socialising is one of the essentials on a “Svanen” cruise.
MEAL TIME!
The cook prepares three meals a day, assisted by the galley watch. Eating takes place on deck or in the hold, depending on weather.
LIFE BELOW DECK
The hold is primarily for sleeping, accommodating 26 slung in hammocks. In case of bad weather, the hold is used as dayroom, mess room and class room.
SHORE LEAVE AND LIFE ASHORE
The Skagerrak coast has several snug harbours, where “Svanen” drops anchor at the end of a day’s sailing. Lifeboats bring crew and participants ashore for grilling and fun. Some nights are spent in one of the towns along the Skagerrak coast. When everything is squared up on board, shore leave is given.
SAFETY
Before departing on a new cruise, lifeboat drill and other safety training is mandatory to all participants. “Svanen”s certificates concerning safety are very strict, with regard to technical equipment as well as crew qualifications, contact with the Norwegian Maritime Museum (owner) and training of participants.
MORE THAN 17,000 YOUTHS HAVE EXPERIENCED SHIPBOARD AND COASTAL LIFE, AND MADE NEW FRIENDS ON BOARD “SVANEN”.
